Ayurveda is an ancient and intact healthcare system that is more relevant than ever to the modern age.  Although the principles of holistic preventative healthcare have been lost in contemporary medicine, we can turn to Ayurveda as a grassroots healthcare system: local, affordable, non toxic, and sustainable.  Contemporary medicine often overlooks the person and focuses on the disease with highly invasive procedures. The alternative is plant-based medicine. In addition to being an affordable form of healthcare, botanical medicine also supports ecological restoration, economic upliftment and preservation of ethnobotanical traditions.  These four global benefits of plant-based medicine are the core principles of Ayurveda. In this class we will describe how organic foods, medicinal plants and essential oils embody modern Ayurveda.
